If you’re a first-generation student eager to learn more about other people and places, we encourage you to apply to First Gen Abroad!

Dates and Deadlines

First Gen Abroad typically travels from late May through late June.

The application deadline is usually in early February.

The commitment deadline is shortly after the application deadline.

How to Get Started

To find out more about First Gen Abroad, we encourage you to attend an information session. In the info sessions, you’ll learn about:

  • This year’s destination country or countries, courses, excursions, and experiences
  • The cost of First Gen Abroad and financial aid options
  • The application process

Recordings will be available for students unable to attend a live session. If you have questions after viewing a recording, you can meet with a First Gen Abroad program advisor. Send an email to firstgen.abroad@wsu.edu to schedule an appointment.

I’m Ready to Apply – Now What?

We’re so excited that you want to join First Gen Abroad! Fill out the online application to start the process.

Starting an application is not a financial or contractual commitment to our program, so if you decide later that First Gen Abroad isn’t for you, you can simply withdraw your application.

Applications for Summer 2025 are currently closed. Check back for future opportunities.

Financial Aid

Nearly every student that travels with First Gen Abroad uses financial aid to help fund the cost of study abroad. If you’re interested in studying abroad, don’t let the cost deter you – our program advisors will help you identify funding resources and apply for scholarships.

First-gen students have unique backgrounds, impressive goals, and meaningful reasons to study abroad, which makes them highly eligible for many national and university scholarships! Every year, at least one student receives the distinguished Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, and most students receive some type of aid. Attend an info session or meet with a program advisor to learn more.
