Below you can find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions faculty and staff have about supporting first-gen students. If you have a question that isn't answered here or elsewhere on this site, please contact First at WSU.

  • How do I know if students are first gen?

You probably won’t, unless they identify themselves as first gen. Don’t assume a student is first-gen based on their identities.

  • How can I support first-gen students in my classroom/office/department?

    • If you’re first gen yourself, let students know! Knowing that you’re also first gen can help students feel more comfortable with you. You can display first-gen swag around your office, put your first-gen status on your syllabus and/or email signature, and talk about your experiences as a first-gen student.
    • Whether or not you’re first gen, one of the best things you can do is provide reminders for all students about resources available on campus. Reminding students about tutoring, mental health services, financial aid, the food pantry, and more is a good way to normalize using those services.
    • Read through the tips in the Best Practices section, contact First at WSU with specific questions and needs.
  • What can I do if a first-gen student in my class is struggling?

How you respond to a struggling student will depend on the specific challenge(s) the student is facing, but the resources listed on the Resources page are a good place to start.

When in doubt, refer students to the Student Care Network or contact the Office of the Dean of Students.
